Christian Tortu will try anything – as likely to combine fruit and vegetables in his bouquets as flowers and branches; producing monochrome arrangements; selling dried flowers (it is to him we owe the universal vogue for bouquets held together by stems of plants); designing things other than bouquets, vases for example, which is logical, but also table linen and bed linen, china, candles and small furniture; and finally, entering the very trendy world of fashion, luxury goods and advertising as a florist, where he quickly became absolutely essential.

Fashion shows with Dior, Chanel and Balmain, the Cannes Festival, there is not a smart event, trendy exhibition or trade show that does not call on his talents. He is the darling of fashion and lifestyle magazines, in which he is described as a floral artist, the “great couturier of the petal” or the Mozart of flowers. [By Monique Perrot-Lanaud, journalist]

Prepping for my first photo shoot…

Thank goodness for the very mild November afternoon as Laura, from [63] Design, and her daughter Mena worked the cameras and contributed as hand models, too.

elegant ethereal floral design

I am Patricia Johnson, a fashion designer by trade, world-traveled, and inspired by the beauty of flowers!

A Lehigh Valley native, I moved to NYC in the mid 70s to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology; while living in midtown Manhattan, I discovered an unbelievable paradise in the middle of the city: the flower district on 27 & 28th St – only  a block from my school.  The foliage, flowers and trees spilled onto the streets throughout the year, allowing floral designers to purchase materials from around the world.

The enticing aromas and hues of colors have inspired me throughout my 25-year career as a fashion designer.

My professional travels to Europe and Asia over the years have allowed me incredible opportunities to absorb cultures, history, languages (I speak excellent taxi Chinese!) and access to local floral and foliage. During my travels, I have taken  photos and kept journals, at first not understanding my desire to record those experiences.

I call the Valley home and live locally with my husband and teenage son, but my work as a fashion designer takes me into New York on a weekly basis
and provides an advantage of having access to the flower markets of the city – unique floral not found in PA, which I use in my arrangements.

The colors, the forms, the light that flowers exude have captured me and the interest in creating amazing and unique arrangements as an art form has brought me to this new venture.  I have contributed my work for many Lehigh Valley Art Council events and my arrangements can be found at local restaurants and businesses.

Inspired by the work I do in fashion, my arrangements are unusual, unexpected and ethereal! I collect vintage textiles and trims and often use them in my floral design. My work appeals to creative minds, yet with a sensibility that touches into a past time.  My biggest inspiration in the world of floral design is Christian Tortu.

I look forward to bringing my floral style to your home, business, event or as a wonderful gift!

Best,

Patricia Johnson
